The largest democratic event in the world… 970 million Indians elect their legislative authority today

Polls in India have opened their doors to voters in marathon legislative elections that will last for about 6 weeks, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads the indicators that say he is the most likely to win the elections.

An opinion poll issued by the Pew Institute last year reported that 80% of Indians had a positive view of Modi after nearly a decade in power, as India became the fifth largest economy in the world, ahead of the United Kingdom.

Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party began an informal campaign last month, seeking to repeat the landslide victory it achieved in 2014 and 2019.

The main opposition Congress Party, which led India’s struggle for independence and then ruled the country for decades, is absent, as it no longer participates in power in only 3 states out of 28 states in the country.

970 million Indians have the right to vote to elect the 543 members of Parliament, more than the total population of the United States, the European Union and Russia combined, in the largest practice of democracy in the world. (Eye)
